Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for racing around the world. I stayed local, coaching some SCCA Spec Miata racers at Carolina Motorsports Park.
I’ve worked with Ashton Harrison and Ben Rooke before, and both of them had been to CMP earlier in the season. We picked up where we had left off that last time, and both of them had great weekends: they finished 1-2 in the Carolina Cup Enduro, with Ben taking the win!
In the Spec Miata sprint races, Ben finished in the top three and Ashton got her best Spec Miata result of a top five! Both of them have made a lot of progress this season, and it’s only May. I look forward to seeing what else they accomplish this year.
Global MX-5 Cup testing continues this week. We’re drawing ever closer to creating the final spec as we test various manufacturers of tires, brake components and dampers. We look at performance, longevity, price point and partner relationships with Mazda when we evaluate aftermarket components like these.
Later this week I’ll be in Detroit for the next TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at Belle Isle. It’s always an exciting event because we race on a street circuit on an island in the middle of the Detroit River! This year, the addition of the Prototype Challenge class will add further racing excitement for the Detroit fans because three of the four TUDOR classes will be on track.
I’ll arrive at Belle Isle Thursday, and we’ll get on track on Friday. I’ll be tweeting during the weekend, so you can follow along with our race in Detroit.
