This is my view in Race Control!
This past week was the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, and both teams and fans alike were treated to gorgeous weather. The St. Pete street circuit is an incredible place for racing, with big skyscrapers lining the track on one side and yachts in the water lining the other side!
I was attending for the second stop in the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Series schedule, which was hosting rounds three and four of the championship. The competition was as close as ever, which we have come to know as the norm for this series.
With the top 13 cars setting a time within half a second of each other in qualifying, we knew we were going to have some incredible racing. Of the two races, race one was the most exciting. We saw three lead changes in the final two laps, with a margin of victory of less than 1/10th of a second! That narrow of a margin of victory has happened a countless number of times in this series, which is just incredible to think about.
The $250,000 prize and the championship title are still up for the taking, as it’s still early in the season and no one has been able to put together a perfect four races to start the year off. Consistency will be key when the season rolls into its summer stretch for the top contenders to look for that title and prize purse!
The MX-5 Cup Series takes the month of April off, and the next rounds will be on the West Coast, as the series rejoins IMSA to race at Laguna Seca in May.
