It’s been a whirlwind of a racing season so far, and I can’t believe we’re already halfway through the calendar year. This has been such an exciting season in racing, not only for myself but also for the teams and drivers I’m working with.
The year got off to a fantastic start at Daytona, where I competed in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge four-hour race, driving the Automatic Racing Aston Martin GT4. We ran as high as third in the race and finished a satisfying fifth. Needless to say, it was a great way to start the season with a bang.
Next up was Sebring for two different programs. Reg Williams is campaigning his beautiful Porsche GT3 R in the International GT series this season. Reg and I went on to win the enduro overall that weekend, and Reg has had much success and growth in the car this year. Up next for him is Road America in just a few weeks’ time. They’ve had a fresh repave there, and we’re all anxiously looking forward to what that will be like.
I was also at Sebring for the traditional IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring event, working with JDX’s Carrera Cup effort. They’ve had an impressive start to the season, with race wins and three young, fast drivers. I’ve particularly been working with Elias De La Torre because it’s his first season in Carrera Cup. The 17-year-old continues to evolve at every event!
Elias and the rest of the JDX team have a busy few months coming up, as the first portion of the Carrera Cup season had predominantly street circuit events that limited our testing ability. Now, coming into the full swing of the season, we’ll be busy both testing and racing at all the upcoming tracks. It’s going to be great for Elias’s continued development.
The SRO World Challenge Series didn’t get its start until later in the year, kicking off its season the first weekend of April at Sonoma Raceway. I’m working with RVA Graphics and Krugspeed, who are competing in different classes at these race weekends.
Both teams have had an exciting start to the year, collecting Hard Charger Awards and podium results. In the past three events, the Krugspeed team has gotten two podium finishes in GT4. The series goes on its summer break now for the month of July, but we’re going to keep the momentum going into the second half of the year.
It’s been a whirlwind of a season so far, and I’m thankful to have already experienced so much success this year. I’m excited for what the balance of 2023 brings.
