Typically, I find myself working out in the gym several times a week. Since gyms are closed right now, I’m having to find alternative routines to stay fit and active. Luckily, we’re still able to enjoy the outdoors, which opens up a variety of options. With this beautiful spring weather here in the Carolinas, it’s actually a lot of fun to get some exercise outdoors!
Rather than feeling limited with your workout routine options, you can be a bit creative and find a lot of great ways to stay in shape. For me, I’m running outdoors on trails near home more frequently, and I’m even getting out in my kayak on the river or lake on the weekends. Of course, on the rainy days, I’m fortunate to have an indoor rower at home, which allows me to work on my cardio while staying in one place. There are a variety of alternatives, from treadmills and stationary bikes to free online workouts that you can find through YouTube.
Other important areas that I really try to focus on include reaction drills and doing high heart-rate activities immediately followed by hand-eye coordination challenges, often through apps on the phone or tablet. The activities replicate the conditions you’d find in racing or high-performance driving, where you have a high heart rate but still have to maintain driving precision and coordination.
Stay tuned to my Facebook page in the coming weeks. I’ll be posting a few specific exercises to share how I stay physically and mentally sharp. In the meantime, I want to hear what kind of creative fitness routines you’re coming up with!
