This past weekend was an absolutely stunning one at Virginia International Raceway. The weather was exactly what you dream about in the middle of summer, when you’re at a sweltering race track! It was cool and crisp, making it perfect for the International GT (IGT) Series race weekend.
It was the season finale for longtime coaching client Reg Williams as well as a new client in a different class, David Herrington. It was a fun and different dynamic working with both a longtime client and a new one. Reg put in a strong, consistent performance throughout the event, which is what I’ve often seen from him during our many seasons working together.
Is that a giant trophy or what?!
David is fairly new to both the car he’s driving and the series itself. In fact, David was able to achieve his personal best lap time by more than two seconds throughout the course of the weekend. Both he and I were ecstatic about that progress!
The format of the weekend included a test day, which allowed me to help with setting up the car and providing reference data that we could work with during the IGT event itself. With the fall temperatures in full effect, the mornings were really cool, which made getting the tires up to temperature a challenge. This was especially true on Sunday during the one-hour enduro, which started at 8am!
Despite the tricky conditions initially, as the track warmed up, the lap times dropped, and both Reg and David were able to get podium results in their respective classes as well as new personal best lap times.
It was a fabulous way to wrap up the season for both Reg and David, and I’m really pleased with how popular the IGT series has become. It’s a great series that suits both drivers very well, and we’re all looking forward to the 2023 season, which will include some West Coast races for the first time!
