Since the Roar Before the 24, I’ve been busy with the team at their headquarters in Coral Springs, Florida. My teammate Jonathan Bomarito and I have been in the shop, which is a neat change of pace for us. We get to see the behind-the-scenes operations on a day-to-day basis. Shop hours this week were 7am to 7pm every day, including Saturday, and the guys have worked tirelessly to get the cars disassembled, prepped and reassembled in that short 8-day span.
Jonathan and I are mostly focused on getting the driver touch points perfect, so we have the ease and use of controls as streamlined as possible. We’ve been working on things like labeling the switches and panels and making sure they light up at night, and all the small detail items that speed up the driver change process.
On Saturday afternoon, we headed to the 9th annual Classic Mazda dealer event in Orlando. It grows in popularity every year. This year the Boy Scouts joined for their pinewood derby, and there were over 50 entries. There was a class for adults, so of course we had to enter a SKYACTIV Mazda derby car!
It’s always fun to meet fans who are planning to come to the race and to answer questions about the cars, and a little competition on the pinewood derby track made it even better. My No. 07 entry was lucky enough to win the adult class! That’s the first win for Mazda this year, so hopefully it’s the start of a great season to come. 😉 I’m off to Daytona today to get ready for the busy week ahead – I can’t wait!
