I just got back from a trip north of the border, where I was at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, affectionally known as Mosport, for the annual IMSA event. The Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup series was back in action for their fourth event of the season. The series had taken a long “spring break,” but now they are picking up momentum, and things are really heating up in the championship.
Mosport is always a unique favorite for many, as not only are the Canadian fans extremely passionate about their motorsports, but the fast, flowing 2.5-mile circuit really provides challenges and produces some incredible racing. With its long, uphill back straightaway, the drafting nature of the MX-5s puts on a show that is nearly impossible to rival, and it creates edge-of-your-seat excitement.
It was Mazda Scholarship recipient Ethan Lampe who had the field covered with his breakout win, and he went on to sweep the weekend in Canada with back-to-back victories. Ethan wasn’t the only big winner from the event, as championship contender Bobby Gossett also had an incredible performance, with two second-place finishes.
Despite the top two being a repeat in both races at Mosport, it was hardly a predictable race, with constant position changes at the front. In the end, the points championship is really shaping up as we are now officially more than halfway through the 2026 season, and Justin Adakonis is the current leader.
The series is back in action in just one month’s time during the next IMSA round, which will be at Virginia International Raceway the weekend of August 22-23.
For me, I have a quick turnaround this week as I’m off to Watkins Glen for the next round of the International GT Series. Watkins Glen is absolutely one of my favorite tracks, and I always look forward to my time there. Check back next week for a full report about that event!
